Design-focused Niko clinches two prestigious Henry van de Velde awards
With design an integral part of Niko’s DNA since the beginning, it comes as no surprise that the Belgian family business won two Henry van de Velde awards this year.
Niko, took home the gold in the Company category and also clinched an award in the Habitat category for its innovative touchswitch.
“It is always great to be recognised by your peers, which is what the Henry van de Velde award means to us,” said Jo De Backer, executive director, Niko Group.
Known as the Oscars of the Flemish design world, the Henry van de Velde Awards honours excellence in design of products, services and projects, and aims to celebrate Belgian-made greatness.
As a manufacturer of electrical installations and home automation, Niko has always placed emphasis on good design throughout its 100-year history, producing game changing products that meets users’ needs without compromising on user experience and aesthetics.
One of these is its innovative touchswitch, an electronic control panel that replaces a conventional switch.
What makes it so remarkable is that this one switch allows the user to control up to 12 different functions such as lighting, heating, blinds, ventilation and shutters, all from the convenience of a mobile application.
Luc Meirlaen, design director at Niko says: “Intelligent product design is a hallmark of Niko, and is always incorporated into the development of a product, from the very first phase. It is not just about the design of a product. It also needs to be user-friendly, easy to install and very durable. The touchswitch is a great example of that.”
