|Project:||Renovation and interior design of a historical monument, competition 1st prize|
|Project type:||Renovation, Competition 1st Prize|
|Project status:||Renovation completed 2008|
|Surface area:||3,300 m²|
|Construction cost:||SGD 44,000,000|
The aim of this renovation was to give the 1958 World Expo monument a contemporary look without losing the identity of its origins. The renovated iron molecule was rejuvenated with a shiny new skin.
This rejuvenation had to be reflected in the internal spaces as well, to bring back the Atomium’s forgotten charm. This was done in the least intrusive way possible by covering the interior of the spheres with galvanized steel and the exterior with stainless steel.
The renovation project was awarded The Steelie Award 2010.
The project also received various awards and accolades through the years:
2008: shortlisted in the Architecture Prize – Horta
- Laureate in Interior Renovation in Lensvelt de Architect Interiur
- Laureate in Interior Renovation in LEAF Awards (a leading European Architect Forum)
- 1st Prize in the Renovation category (architectural and aesthetics) in Staalbouwwedstrijd (Infosteel)
