The new headquarter of Umicore SA have become a worldwide reference project for zinc constructions.
The challenge of this project was to give a new image to this leading Belgian industry while keeping the industrial heritage of the site. Although the client had already accepted the idea of tearing down the old building and replacing it, we suggested to keep the imposing brick building and build a lighter extension to it, using the key selling product of Umicore, which is zinc.
The project won the ArchiZinc Trophee rewarding constructions in zinc. The project was also recognised for its interior features, and was shortlisted for World Architecture News (WAN) Awards and Lensvelt Awards.
